Support Refugee Students Succeed in School and Prepare for College

Mentor a high school refugee student as they explore their post-secondary options! Offer support and guidance as students navigate academic coursework, college applications, future plans, and more. The mentoring commitment is for 1 year, beginning January 2026 and ending December 2026, with the option to extend through your mentee’s graduation (through June 2027).

Mentor Responsibilities include:

  • Building a supportive relationship with a refugee student

  • Committing to mentoring a minimum of 6 hours per month/once a week (in-person meetings at least twice a month)

  • Guiding students through academic, career, and college planning

  • Helping connect students to additional community resources

  • Communicating & collaborating with PAIR staff for continued support, including monthly 15-minute phone check-ins

  • Documenting student meetings by the 5th of each month (example: all October notes submitted by November 5th)

Qualifications:

  • 21+ years of age

  • Must have a drivers license and reliable access to an insured vehicle

  • Background check and mentor training required

  • Empathy, active listening, and non-judgmental approach

  • Ability to commit to a one-year relationship (with potential to extend)

  • Must be able to travel to the Gulfton/Sharpstown area of Southwest Houston or West Houston/Energy Corridor
